As I dug into my article on Omaha Westside's Ethan Goldner, I realized that he and Fremont's Jose Gonzalez are aiming for their third State XC medal in 2018. That made me wonder - how many 3-time and 4-time State XC medalists have there been? I invested about four hours compiling a Class A boys' list for the past 20 years based on the State results published on the NSAA website. Thirteen boys achieved this in the past decade, and twenty-two in the prior decade. Who wants to compile the Class B-D boys and all of the girls' classes?
Colby Wissel of Kearney stands out on this list for his three State championships. He had an outstanding career at Kansas, finishing 17th, 15th, 8th and 5th at the NCAA Midwest Regionals. He ran at three NCAA XC championships and his top finishes were 26th (2006) and 39th (2007). He was the first Jayhawk since Billy Mills in 1959 to become a two-time All-American.
